AMERICA, WHERE IS YOUR CONSCIENCE?

I am sick to my stomach, I really am. What bothers me most, I think, is that we seem to be living in a post-ethics world. Apparently, nobody cares about decency anymore, or kindness, or compassion. What the fuck happened to us? Seriously? America was the shining city on the hill. America was the beacon of hope and liberty for all the world to admire and aspire to. Are half of Americans really this stupid? This easily conned? This cruel?

Yeah, yeah, I know the rhetoric. They watch FOX, you say; their social media doesn’t look like mine. But they watch his speeches, don’t they? They hear his hateful comments, his threats, his ranting, his cursing, don’t they? They watched the events of January 6th, didn’t they!?!

There was a time when simply hearing the man speak . . . he would get arrested or locked in a padded room. We would think he was mentally ill. We would recoil at his vitriolic speech, his lack of manners, his playground-bully antics. Have we truly fallen so far as a people?

Oh, but they don’t really like the guy, I hear … it’s just that groceries have gotten overly expensive. Fine. I get it. But is your pocketbook the only thing that matters in your life? Are we living in a society that values money above all other virtues? So fuck equality. Fuck women’s rights. FUCK democracy. And to Hell with honesty, decency, sanity, and every respectable thing that makes life meaningful and precious because . . . I get a discount on shampoo!

Again, I feel this great sense of disillusionment. GOOD does not always triumph over EVIL, nor FREEDOM over TYRANNY. That sorta shit happens in movies and TV and the kinds of books we like to read, because it makes us feel good to think that way, to believe life makes sense and our fellow human beings are essentially worthy of redemption. But this is a comforting delusion. History does not bear this out. History gives us Hitlers and Stalins and Putins and the people who prop them up and adore them.

Evil won today. Hate won today. Oppression won today. I am not being hyperbolic. And if you voted for the guy, you can go fuck yourself.
