As a fantasy author, I am legally required to love The Lord of the Rings, and I have to admit that I really do. Despite some very slow plotting, the prose is beautiful in a way that is rarely found in books these days, and the world-building and characters remains the benchmark against which all other fantasies are compared. For my Dungeons & Dragons game, I went back and re-read everything I could from Tolkien, including The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the infamously challenging, Silmarillion, among other writings. I wanted to give my campaign as much authenticity as possible, to create a potential backstory detailing the events of the 2nd age, in which the War of the Witch-King takes place, between Angmar and Arnor. The result was a year-long, 19-session adventure, concluding in the death of my daughter’s character, the wizard heroine, Lilliea.
